How To Reduce High Blood Pressure: Eat Healthy Foods

We are what we eat! What we eat and drink has a significant effect on our blood pressure. Our aim should be to include lots of foods rich in calcium, magnesium, vitamins, fiber and potassium and to avoid foods and drinks which contain saturated fats, sodium, sugar, alcohol, caffeine and cholesterol. Hawthorn

Okay, I know it’s a drink, but it really can help in your battle against high blood pressure. Hawthorn dilates the arteries and improves the flow of blood, so lowering blood pressure. Use a mixture of leaves and flowers to make a tea. Place two teaspoonfuls in a cup and add boiling water. Leave to infuse for around twenty minutes before straining. Drink two or three cups of the brew per day.

TOMATOES

Tomatoes are one of the great foods that lower high blood pressure, they are rich in calcium and potassium, and contain vitamins A, C and E. Tomatoes also contain lycopene which is a powerful antioxidant that is reputed to lower the risk of heart disease. The antioxidants found in tomatoes can prevent LDL (bad!) cholesterol from oxidizing and sticking to the blood vessel walls, which would raise your blood pressure. Drinking tomato juice is a great way to enjoy tomatoes. If you own a juicer, make your own. If you have to buy tomato juice make sure it’s a pure juice with no added salt or sugar.

SPINACH

Spinach is rich in magnesium and helps prevent heart disease. It also contains folate which protects the body from homocysteine, an excessive amount of which can cause heart attacks and strokes. Cook for as little time as possible. Better still, eat raw in salads. Make sure you include plenty of spinach in your diet.

GARLIC

Garlic helps thin the blood and stops blood vessels clogging, so reducing blood pressure. Try chewing a clove or two of garlic each day. If you don’t want to lose all your friends you may prefer to take it in the form of a supplement.

BROCCOLI

Broccoli is full of nutrition. Not only is it high in potassium but it contains chromium that helps regulate blood sugar and insulin. Don’t over cook it. Place it in a pan with just enough water to cover it, that way it will retain more nutrients. Better still, steam it. When I’m preparing broccoli I always cut off a few florets and eat them raw. Try it, they’re delicious! When looking for ways how to reduce high blood pressure, broccoli really should be high on your shopping list!

How To Reduce High Blood Pressure: Cut Down On The Salt

When looking for ways how to reduce high blood pressure, a good place to start is to cut down on the amount of salt you consume. Make no mistake, salt (sodium chloride) is a poison that directly affects your blood pressure by causing your body to retain an excessive amount of water.

True, the human body does need salt, but only a tiny amount. Nearly all of us eats more than fifty per cent too much; it’s not really our fault though as around seventy-five per cent of the salt we consume is already present in the food we buy. Eating less salt is a good way how to reduce high blood pressure, and each of us should aim to eat less than six grams per day.

But how? Well, for a start don’t add any salt to your food during coking or at the table. At first you may find that it tastes bland, but you’ll soon get used to it. If you find that you really can’t do without it then try a low-sodium substitute.

Try to get into the habit of checking the labels of the food you buy: soups, ketchups, pickles, sauces, ready-meals, breakfast cereals, and even bread all usually have a high salt content. (If the label doesn’t say “salt” then look for “sodium”. One gram of sodium is equal to 2.5 grams of salt).

What should I look for? If the label states that the salt content is 0.25 grams (or less) per 100 grams, then you can eat as much of it as you like. If it’s between 0.25 and 1.25 then you can eat small amounts occasionally. Anything over 1.2 should be avoided.

Beware of labels that state that the contents are low- or reduced-salt. Ask yourself the question “lower than what?” or “reduced from what?” Make sure you still read the label and take nothing for granted.

Fact: high blood pressure causes around sixty per cent of all strokes and forty per cent of all heart attacks. In a nutshell, lowering your salt intake to less than six grams per day is an easy way how to reduce high blood pressure.
